At the invitation of Marco Trombetti, founder of Translated, I gave a talk in the beautiful amphitheater of Pi Campus in Rome, entitled “The future of machines and humanity“. (Video in Italian.)

Starting from the acceleration of technological change, the increase in computing power and the number of devices that make up the Internet of Things, the talk focused on how the necessary autonomy of these machines generates important questions about the decisions that they have to make. Made quickly, in the absence of the possibility of human supervision, the decisions will inevitably have moral and ethical consequences. We can not afford to let the implementation of the algorithms that drive decisions occur in the absence of a science of morality.

The long and interesting session of questions and answers that followed the presentation focused on the social implications of artificial intelligence and the challenges around the profound transformations that we will face in dealing with the changes that will come.
